Emile Alexay (1891-1948/49)
A portrait painter, court painter to the Hapsburgs in Austria, pioneer of luminous painting in fine art and art educator, he was born in Volloc, near Budapest, Hungary in 1891. Emile Alexay entered the School of Industrial Art in Budapest at the age of fourteen and in his fourth year won the contests in life drawing and portraiture. After graduating, Alexay secured a position with one of the eminent architects of Budapest and at the age of nineteen had complete charge of the decoration of a Greek Catholic Church where he planned and painted the mural decorations of the chapel in their entirety. This won him renown, thus enabling him to attend the Academy of Fine Arts at Munich.
