Ernesto Tamariz was one of the five Mexican sculptors who built more monuments throughout the Mexican Republic, was an artist with a great knowledge of academicism, especially the artistic genre of the neoclassical period, as well as the exaltation of Mexican nationalism inspired by the Greco-Latin art. Over time he specialized in public monuments, religious statues and funerary art. Among his masterpieces is the monument to the Niños Héroes de Chapultepec known as "Altar a la Patria", the sculpture of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina and John Paul II in the ancient Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the central altar of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City and the tombs of Alfonso Reyes in the Rotunda of Illustrious Persons and that of Genera
