Biography Esteban Valderrama
Esteban Valderrama was born in Matanzas, Cuba in 1892. In 1906 he won a scholarship from the provincial government to attend the Academy of San Alejandro* in Havana, Cuba. After four years of study and with one of the highest scores on the exams, he was awarded a scholarship to travel to Madrid and attend the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid.
In 1911 he attended the National School of Fine Arts in Paris. In 1914 he was back in Havana where he worked for El Heraldo de Cuba as a staff artist. In 1918 he was invited to join the faculty of the Academy of San Alejandro where he taught until his retirement after the Revolution of 1959.
