Esther Meyer always lived her life to the hilt. Growing up in a
small Oregon town, she decided she "didn't want to be born, marry and
die without ever having lived." So at the age of 19, even though
Marshfield (now Coos Bay) residents rarely left their hometown, Esther
boarded a train bound for Washington, DC and spent over a year working
for the government. She was there at the end of World War I and
remembered the thrill of watching the Armistice Day Parade go down
