Biography   Evelina (Nina) Mount

Born into a family of extraordinary talent, she became one of the few professionally trained 19th century female artists. She was the daughter of Henry Mount, who was an academician at the National Academy of Design, and her uncles, Shepard Alonzo Mount and William Sidney Mount, were also well known artists. She was raised in Stony Brook, Long Island and her father died when she was a child. Her uncle William took a particular interest in her art, and as a young woman, she spent much time working with him in his studio. He talked to her of New York's art scene and encouraged her to go to exhibitions in that city.
