Ferdinand W. Ellington (1894-1974): Painter, commercial artist, and fashion designer.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, British West Indies, Ferdinand W. Ellington immigrated to the United States at the age of 18. He arrived at Ellis Island on January 1st, 1913, and established residence in the Jamaica-St. Albans area of Queens, New York. While studying at the National Academy of Design, Ellington worked at night as an elevator operator. In the infancy of what would come to be known as the Harlem Renaissance, his post-impressionist landscape Bronx River Falls (1914) painting was shown in the Harmon Foundation's 1929 exhibition of works created exclusively by African-American artists.
