Biography Fitzgerald Cornwall Peploe
Fitzgerald Cornwall Peploe was born in England on the September 3, 1862, the second son of Major Daniel Peploe M.P. and Mrs Leila Peploe (daughter of Sir Thomas Metcalfe 4th Bart and niece of Lord Metcalfe - onetime Governor General of Canada). They lived at Garnstone Castle, Weobley in Herefordshire, which had been in the family's possession since 1660.
His family had hoped he would enter the British Army, but in 1884 he was sent to Canada 'under a cloud' to learn farming. By 1887 he had taken up sculpture studying at Florence and later at Paris and Rome, and he finally settled in New York where he had a studio at No 74 1/2, West 54th Street, the site of present day Museum of Modern Art.
