Biography Floyd DeWitt
Raised in Wolf Point, Montana on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation, Floyd DeWitt had an early exposure to horses, the subject matter that along with abstract figures became the focus of his sculpture. Using sketchbook and his talent for drawing he began as a young man studying the interaction between horses and their cowboy and Indian riders.
DeWitt served in the Army where he was exposed to many other cultures, and then he returned to his hometown where he had odd jobs including bartending, ranch handing, and being a cop. Feeling restless, he went to Minneapolis where he enrolled in the Minneapolis School of Art and Design and came under the tutelage of sculptor Paul Granlund and painter David Ratner.
