Fra Angelico, born in Florence about 1400, was named Guido, son of Piero, who was probably a farmer near the village of Vicchio in Tuscany, about ten miles from Florence. Until recent years his birthdate was thought to be 1387, but new evidence points to a date closer to 1400.
Nothing was known of his early life; recognized at an early age as being exceptional and he could have made a fortune at his paintings as a layman. He preferred to become a Dominican friar. He would pray before taking up his brush, and could not paint the Crucifixion without weeping. &nbs
