Frances Hodgkins was born on April 28, 1870 in Dunedin, New Zealand.
Hodgkins, along with he sister Isabel, she studied at "Braemar House." Initially, Frances talents were overshadowed by her sister's accomplishments. Hodgkins only produced a handful of landscapes in New Zealand. Dating from 1886, Hodgkins produced her earliest know works of charcoal sketches of relations and human figure.
