Biography Frank Stokes
An artist/explorer whose specialty for which he was most known was Arctic and Antarctic scenes, he was on Admiral Peary's expedition to Greenland from 1892 to 1894 and the Amundsen Ellsworth Antarctic Expedition of 1901 to 1902. He depicted these places on canvas for "Scribner's" magazine and other publications. Several times on these adventures, he came close to losing his life.
He was born in Nashville, Tennessee and began his art career as a student of Thomas Eakins in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He spent nine years in England and France where he was a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts with Jean Leon Gerome, the Academy Colarossi under Raphael Collin, and the Julian Academy with Gustave Boulanger.
