Born in Topsham, ME in 1838. Leaving Maine in the 1880s, Thompson boarded a clipper ship and sailed to California where he had family members in Santa Barbara. He was a sea captain who spent most of his life at sea and painted maritime subjects and modeled clipper ships in his leisure. His uncle, Frances Thompson, was captain of the brig, Pilgrim, whose journeys are chronicled in Dana's Two Years Before The Mast. Frank Thompson committed suicide in Santa Barbara on July 23, 1905.
