Biography Frederic Shaw
A late 19th, early 20th-century sculptor from Massachusetts, Frederic Shaw developed a method called translucent sculpture, whereby he used thin slabs of marble to create a window effect within a building. Experimenting with varying thicknesses, he achieved highlights and shadows that many people found astonishing...."the whole mass of marble being suffused with a rich golden colour produced by the rays of light penetrating through it and bringing out the design with exquisite life-likeness." (Couper 56)
Among his works was a design of Christ walking on the water, a triple gothic window representing Ascension, and a wood-nymph by a pool of water that reflected her shadow, which was exhibited in 1893 at the Paris Salon.
