Frederic Dorr Steele (1873-1944)
Born in Marquette, Michigan, to a family that appreciated and nurtured artistic talent. His mother, a painter, and his grandmother, a highly regarded poet encouraged him to pursue his gift for drawing from an early age. When he was just sixteen, Steele went to New York City where he worked for three years as an architectural draftsman and studied both in the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design.
