Frederick Alfred Leekney was born in Latvia about 1900. An archaeologist by profession, Leekney traveled all over the world and painted in his leisure. After a seven-year tour of the Orient, he came to Los Angeles in 1924 and stayed for six years. While there, he uncovered early frescoes in the San Fernando Mission. Leaving California in 1930, he returned to Shanghai.
