Biography Frederick Eckstein
In 1794, Frederick Eckstein arrived in Philadelphia from Berlin, Germany where he was most likely born circa 1775. He immigrated with his family, including his father, Johann Eckstein, a sculptor who had worked for Frederick the Great. Eckstein became a noted sculptor and teacher during the mid 19th century.
Working as a sculptor with his father and Charles Willson Peale he helped form the short-lived Columbianum Society in Philadelphia. After his father's death in 1817, Frederick left Philadelphia to become a schoolteacher, first at Harmony, Pennsylvania, and then at Wheeling and Charleston, West Virginia.
He settled in Cincinnati in 1823 and lived in the Middle West for the remainder of his life. He did portrait busts of An
