Biography Frederick Hall
Frederick Hall, known by most as simply Fred Hall, is perhaps best known
as a member of the Newlyn School of painters. Having studied at
Lincoln School of Art between 1879 and 1881, he moved to Cornwall in the
early 1880s to paint alongside fellow ex-Lincoln student, Frank
Bramley, Stanhope Forbes and others. He remained until 1898.
Newlyn works combine the practice of working outside, en plein air, with
an interest in social realism, particularly the depiction of rural
life. However, as time went on, his style became more overtly
impressionistic and this later group of works demonstrates his
more mature style.
