Biography Frederick Buchholz
Frederick Heppner Buchholz was born in 1901 in Springfield, MA, and from an early age (in high school) began painting with local painters.
During the Great Depression, he managed to overcome the economic situation and with little support, made it to New York City. There he enrolled in the Art Students League under the tutelage of Kenneth Hayes Miller (1876-1952).
When Buchholz's funds ran out and he couldn't afford to continue his studies, he began to work. He started out at a printing company and then a designer for a textile firm, where his speciality was blanket designs. This work supported him throughout the 30s and early 40s and allowed him to continue to paint without financial help from the Federal Arts Projects.
