Biography Fridolin Schlegel
Fridolin Schlegel was trained in Germany before immigrating to the
United States in the wake of the revolution of 1848. He settled
in Newark, New Jersey and became active in the art community there.
In the early 1850's, Schlegel was one of the artists who participated
in the Newark Art Union, which exhibited work in Newark's Library
Hall. Their art was available for purchase by subscription and
they were successful enough to construct a separate Gallery next to the
Library by the end of the year. Their mistake was to hold a
public lottery of 40 paintings and sculpture. Although the
