Biography Fritz Cleary
A sculptor of portrait heads and art critic in New Jersey for the Asbury Park Press from 1945 to 1962, Fritz Cleary was born in New York City. He grew up in a cultured family with musical parents. In high school, he studied with Greek sculptor, Polynogtis Vargis, and then attended the National Academy of Design as a student of Charles Keck followed by enrollment in the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. He was also a wood-carving student of Alexander Finta.
In order to make money, he took up writing and lecturing on art and teaching sculpture.
