Born in Centre County, PA in 1826. "Ed" Withington came across the plains to California in 1849. His attempts at gold mining failed so he settled in Nevada City as a sign and carriage painter. His drawing of the town was lithographed and published in 1850. He was elected a town trustee in 1859, owner of a dance hall and a mine on Banner Mountain, and active in Nevada City until 1880.
