Gary Woo was born in Guangzhou, China on February 14, 1925. Wood immigrated to San Francisco as a teenager. He served in the army during World War Two and was stationed in Japan. Upon discharge, he returned to San Francisco and studied under David Park at the California School of Fine Arts and with Lundy Siegriest at the Art League. He maintained a studio on Grant Avenue and developed a distinctive abstract style. An important solo exhibition at the DeYoung Museum in 1960 brought him great prominence. He died in San Francisco on January 16, 2006.
