The following biography is based on information provided to AskART.com by Paul E. Truesdell, Jr., a distant cousin of the artist, whose source is a family genealogy:

Gaylord Sangston TRUESDELL was born on January 1, 1850 in Waukegan, Illinois and died June 13, 1899, in New York City. Unmarried, he was a celebrated painter and artist who began as an engraver. He studied in the Pennsylvania Academy and, in 1885, went to France where he worked under Ernest Meissonier and Fernand Cormon.

In 1889, his painting "There's The Shepherd" received a bronze medal in the Salon. In 1892, "Vaches au Borde de la Riviere" received the first gold medal awarded by the Salon to an American painter.
