Biography George Stephens
Born in Rahuway, New Jersey, George Stephens lived in Philadelphia and Arden, Delaware, which he co-founded to create a utopian environment in which art and crafts and labor were interwoven and land was owned by the community.
He was a teacher at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Drexel Academy, and Spring Gardens Institute, and was a member of the Philadelphia Sketch Club and the Art Club of Philadelphia.
He was a student of Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy and married Eakins' sister, Caroline. Stephens then turned her against her brother for reasons never quite clear. He became the instigator of Eakins' being ousted from teaching at the Academy, claiming that Eakins' anatomy classes were immoral
