Born in 1828 in Washington, Connecticut, he settled in Wallingford, Connecticut after taking up painting professionally, and was custodian of the Wadsworth Athenaeum Gallery at Hartford for a short time.
He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City about 1847, returning to Hartford one year later. C. 1857 he went abroad for two years, studying in Baden, Germany and Rome, Italy.
In September 1860, he went to Springfield, Illinois to paint the portrait of the Republican nominee for president, Abraham Lincoln. Wright painted a second portrait of Lincoln later that year.  Wright also worked in the South but most of his time was spent in Hartford.
