George Hanmer Croughton was born in April 1843 in London, England. He was a painter, photographer, and illustrator. He studied at the National School of Arts at South Kensington under Thomas Sydney Cooper, and in Antwerp and Paris. He was a member of and held several positions with the Rochester Art Club Rochester, NY starting in 1892, including vice president and president.
He exhibited at the International Expo in London in 1863 where he won a medal, at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Exhibit in 1864 where he won a medal, one floral watercolor at the Society of British Artists in 1874, and at the Cotton Centennial Exhibit
