Biography George Leo Frankenstein
George Frankenstein, best known for his Civil War scenes, was also a portrait and landscape painter who lived from 1875 to 1900 in New York City, where he also worked as a journalist.
George was a member of the Frankenstein family, a gifted group of German immigrant artists: John Peter (circa 1816-1881), Godfrey N. (1820-1873), Gustavus (died 1902), Marie (1822-1900) and Eliza (1828-1919). The family arrived in Cincinnati in 1831 and moved to Springfield, Ohio, in 1849.
From 1867 to 1869, George Frankenstein traveled abroad with his brother, Gustavus, who was a landscape and marine painter.
