Biography George Annibale
George Oliver Annable was born in Providence, Rhode Island, the son of
a cobbler. He was trained as a stone cutter and marble worker at
the stoneyard of Mr. Tingley in Providence. In 1851 and 1853, he
won prizes or medals for his cameo portraits and busts at the
exhibitions of the Rhode Island Society for the Encouragement of
He made busts of General Greene and Dr. Wayland and others, and from
these commissions made enough money to enable him to achieve his dream
of going to Europe to study painting. He studied with Rothermel in
Paris and with Page in Rome, staying in Europe for four years.
