Ropes, one of nine children, had an interest in nautical subjects from his childhood as his father was a sea captain. In 1897, when Ropes was 19 years old, he began supporting the family because his father died at sea.
He began his career as a sign and carriage painter in Salem and also did landscapes. His teacher, beginning 1802, was Michele Felice Corne (1742-1832) from Rhode Island.
