George Rufus Boynton (American, 1866-1945)
George Boynton was born in Pleasant Grove, Wisconsin in 1866. At theage of 14, after showing a precocious artistic talent, he moved to NewYork City to study at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students’ League. After school, he studied in New York under artists Walter Shirlaw, C.Y. Turner, and J. G. Brown. In 1906, he married Mary Ellicott Junius of New York.
He was a frequent visitor to the Cragsmoor Art Colony in the Hudson River Valley, NY. He became one of America’s preeminent portrait artists and was nicknamed “the painter laureate of Army and Navy life” as he painted dozens of portraits of generals and admirals, including Rear-Admiral Joseph B.
