Biography George Brewster
A sculptor especially known for military figure subjects, George Brewster was also a teacher of modeling whose schools were Cooper Union beginning 1900; Art Students League of New York beginning 1886; and Rhode Island School of Design, 1893 and 1894.
He studied at the Massachusetts State Normal Art School in Boston, and then spent three years in Paris as a student at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. Among his teachers were Augustin Dumont and Antonin Mercie.
His work includes the figure of Indiana on the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Indianapolis; a portrait bust in 1887 of James Carroll Beckwith in the collection of the National Academy of Design; and the Fountain of Nature, which served as a model for
