George Platt was born in Pennyslvania, in 1839. He was a survey artist as well as trompe l'oeil and landscape painter. In 1867, George Platt accompanied John Wesley Powell's Geological Survey and Exploration expedition that included the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.
Platt returned from Europe in 1874. His early education was at the University of Rochester.
Following these western trips, George Platt took classes at the Pennsylvania Academy and there came under the influence of William Harnett and John Peto, trompe l'oeil painters.
