Biography George Shane
George Shane was a reporter and artist for the "Des Moines Register", beginning in 1938. He wrote human interest stories, articles about art, and a column called "The Visual Arts." In addition he painted many "townscapes" for publication in the Des Moines Sunday Register. These were often accompanied by a history of the town square, or courthouse, or local landmark in the painting. He also painted 100 year old farmsteads. These were quite popular with the people of Iowa, and according to a letter from his widow, all but one of them were sold to private collectors, including the downtown of Greenfield which was sold to Norman Lear who was there filming "Cold Turkey".
