Biography George Hatch
Founder of the American Banknote Company, George Hatch spent his career in New York state as an engraver. He was born in Johnstown and by the mid 1820s was studying with Asher B. Durand. In 1827, Hatch was elected with many others to the National Academy of Design in the classification of Artist, but the next year with revision of all in that classification to Associate, he took that title. By this time he had moved to Albany.
As an engraver, in the 1828 and 1830 Academy exhibitions, he focused on copying art originals and reproductions of paintings. By 1832, he had returned to New York City and become a partner in the engraving firm of Rawdon, Wright and Hatch, a firm he stayed with for many years, mostly as
