Gerhard Ernest Untermann was born in Germany on Nov. 6, 1864. Untermann went to sea as a boy and sailed in clipper ships. While at sea he began painting. In 1893 he became a U.S. citizen. He later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Layton Art School in Milwaukee and with William Heine. While in southern California in 1933, he painted landscapes with poppies and lupines. he died in Vernal, UT on Jan. 5, 1956.
