Gerson Leiber, an American modernist painter whose ambitions were stunted until he attended art school in Budapest, where he had served in the Army during World War II, died on Saturday at his home in Springs, N.Y., a hamlet in East Hampton. He was 96.
He died of a heart attack hours before his wife of 72 years, Judith Leiber, the renowned handbag designer, died, also of a heart attack, at 97. They were buried together on Monday.
