Born in Chicago, IL on July 5, 1867, Gertrude Estabrooks began her art studies at age 12. After two years of private study, she enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago followed by further study in New York and Boston.
At age 19, she opened a studio in Chicago where she gave lessons in genre and still life painting. While residing there she spent several winters in Los Angeles during 1904-09. In 1914 she settled in Berkeley, California where she remained until her death on Aug. 15, 1944. Her forte was still lifes of roses.
