Gertrude Schweitzer (1911-1989)
Gertrude Schweitzer studied at the Pratt Institute and the National Academy of Design. She began her career painting social realist works of women and children but by the 1950s she featured a modernist reduction of stylistic forms especially in her watercolors. While she made detailed preparatory studies, she quickly executed the watercolors themselves, comprising translucent washes and ink highlighting the subject matter.
Schweitzer’s unique form of feminine modernism did not go unnoticed by major art forces, such as Alfred Frankfurter, the publisher and editor of Art News, and she soon won numerous awards including a medal from the American Watercolor Society and one from the Ame
