Giovanni Francesco Pieri is considered the most skilled wax modeller of his day. He was active at the court of the Medici in Florence, and then at the court of Bourbon in Naples. In Florence he was a pupil of the sculptor Joachim Fortini and specialized, according to the biographer of Tuscan artists of the time AF Gabburri in figures in the middle and low relief in colored wax. His portraits were especially appreciated by the last Medici Grand Duke Gian Gastone.
