Biography   Giovanni Francesco Pieri


Giovanni Francesco Pieri is considered the most skilled wax modeller of his day. He was active at the court of the Medici in Florence, and then at the court of Bourbon in Naples.  In Florence he was a pupil of the sculptor Joachim Fortini and specialized,  according to the biographer of Tuscan artists of the time AF Gabburri in figures in the middle and low relief in colored wax.  His portraits were especially appreciated by the last Medici Grand Duke Gian Gastone. 

With the death of the Grand Duke and the end of the Medici government Pieri, like many other artists and craftsmen of the Florentine administration, went to the court of Naples during the reign of Charles of Bourbon.  Prior to 1737, in Florence, Pieri had worked both as   ...  Displaying 750 of 1246 characters.
