Born into a family of artists, Gerolamo Giovenone's father Amadeo was "maestro di legname" (master of wood) and his brothers were painters. Gerolamo Giovenone’s career took place mainly in Vercelli in his family workshop. The first documents concerning him that have made it to the present day, only go back to 1513 and 1514, dates on which he signs and dates La Dispute de Jesus and Les Docteurs (formerly in Avignon, private collection) and the altarpiece of the Buronzo Family (Turin Gallery Sabauda, No. 39), where his style began to assert itself.
His beginnings are poorly documented, he had to train with Martino Spanzotti native of Casale and present in Vercelli between 1481 and 1498, and alongside Spanzott
