Biography Giuseppe Nogari
Pupil of Balestra and Piazetta, Nogari painted some religious paintings, but it was thanks to his "heads of character" that he experienced fame. It softened the contrasting pattern of Piazetta, inspired by Rembrandt, by these anachronistic collars in the eighteenth century, or how to hang the gilded glittering light on the fabrics. Close to those of his contemporaries, like the Tiepolo or the Gandolfi, his figures of fantasy announce those of Fragonard. A version of our composition is preserved in Genoa, Palazzo Bianco, as Nogari (with variants in the collar); Another, identical to ours, but weaker in execution, would be in Milan, at the Pinacoteca Ambrosianna (after Getty Images).
