Margaret Rogers, known as Gretchen became a painter and pastelist, primarily of portraits and figure studies, but also of still lifes, landscapes, and interiors. This figure and still life painter was a student of Edmund Tarbell at the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts from 1900 to 1907.
She was one of the most promising young artists of the early 20th century in Boston. Her works are sensitively and carefully painted; she used subtle gradations in light and dark rather than harsh juxtapositions of color. She quickly became a popular portraitist and figure painter and received praise for her work.
