Gustavus A. F. Fagerstein was born in Germany in 1828. Fagerstein studied in Berlin at the Royal Academy. He appears to have arrived in northern California about 1870. He worked in San Francisco and was active in the local art scene until 1876. He then moved to Merced and had a studio in Yosemite in 1883-86 and one in Fresno until his demise in 1889.
