Biography Helen Adele Fleck Seyffert
Helen Adele Fleck (Seyffert) was born to Frank Fleck and Annie Dick Fleck in Philadelphia on June 30, 1887. The third of four girls, she was raised in Philadelphia. Her father and Scottish grandfather were successful flower merchants.
In 1905, after graduating from the girls' high school, she was awarded a four year scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA). Instead of attending immediately, she traveled to Europe with her sister, Marion, and mother, living during the winter of 1905 in Cologne with relatives, where she visited museums and played the piano. In the spring, she traveled with her mother to Scotland visiting family, returning to Philadelphia the summer of 1906 to take advantage of her scholarship.
