Helen Millicent Greenleaf was born on April 12, 1874, in Greencastle, Indiana. She was one of ten children born to Clements Allen Greenleaf, a prominent mechanical engineer and inventor of the Greenleaf railway turntable, and Francis Caroline (Phipps) Greenleaf.
Four of the Greenleaf daughters, Helen, Mary, May, and Grace, would become accomplished artists. In 1903, Clements Greenleaf moved his family, including daughter Helen and her first husband, west to Southern California and settled in the area of Upland. Helen married twice: her first marriage was to Melville Judson Mahurin, in 1896 in Indiana, with whom she had a son; the couple later divorced, and her second marriage was to the Reverend Henry P.
