Helen Elizabeth McKay Steele, born on August 29th, 1875, was the daughter of Horace McKay and Martha Nicholson McKay. The youngest of three children, she grew up in what is currently the Old Northside neighborhood of Indianapolis at 1241 Broadway (at the corner of 13th and Broadway Streets). In its heyday, the McKay mansion was a magnet for local artists:
