Born in San Francisco, California on October 4, 1895, Helen Powers was educated and studied art at Columbia University. The daughter of a screenwriter, she then worked in Hollywood doing dialogue printing and the decorative edges surrounding the dialogue, for the silent pictures. Following her marriage to Thomas Cervantes in 1921, she worked as an artist in Long Beach until the early 1940s.
Moving to Santa Monica, she remained there until her death on December 26, 1986. Her later years were devoted to fine art. Inspired by the Old Masters, she painted religious genre and portraits.
