Biography   Helena Wood Smith


Born in Bangor, ME on March 9, 1865. Smith was a resident of Brooklyn, NY and a pupil at the Pratt Institute in 1904. By 1910 she had moved to California and settled on the Monterey Peninsula where she taught at the Carmel Arts & Crafts Club. She was a pupil there in the summer class of Wm M. Chase. On Aug. 12, 1914 she was murdered by her lover, Japanese photographer George Kodani. Exh: SFAA, 1910-13; SF Inst. of Art, 1910; Del Monte Art Gallery, 1912; Calif. Society of Etchers, 1913; SF Women Artists, 1914.
