Biography Henry Di Spirito
Born in Castleforte, Italy, an area known for stone carvers, Henry Di Spirito served in the Italian army during World War I and them came to America, settling in Utica, New York.
He worked as a stone cutter and took classes at Munson-Williams-Proctor Art Institute. In 1942, he went to work for the Works Progress Administration and created dioramas about Utica's history. While taking a class at the Art Institute, he met Richard Davis, a sculpture teacher, who suggested Di Spirito work in stone rather than clay. This set a new career for Di Spirito whose work has become popular in upstate New York.
