Biography   Henry Fewsmith


A Philadelphia portrait and figure painter who died at age 25, Henry Fewsmith studied with John Neagle in Philadelphia and in Dusseldorf, Munich, Paris, and Rome.

He died in his Philadelphia studio on October 22, 1846, shortly after his return from Europe.

The artist Henry Fewsmith studied with and shared a room with Emanuel Leutze when they both studied under Schadow in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1841. There is a portrait of Fewsmith by Leutze shown on page 133 of "Emanuel Leutze,1816-1868: Freedom Is the Only King", by Barbara Groseclose, and published by the Smithsonian Institution Press, 1975.
